CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

I believe all children deserve respect and it is my job to help students to value and take responsibility for their education, rather than punish and force the learning. In class, each student always have a voice. They are encouraged to ask questions, to disagree, and express themselves creatively. Therefore, my classroom management system supports the children to enjoy the learning process and encourages them to succeed academically and socially.

Life Skills
Our learning community practices the Life skills and Lifelong Guidelines. They form the basis for agreement between teacher and students, and among the students, agreement about behavior and expectations (social and academic). The Life Skills are posted in our classroom.

Class Meetings
Being human beings, and being kids themselves, problems do arise, therefore, regularly scheduled class meetings are conducted to work out solutions. Compliments are also important and are given throughout the day.

Trust
An essential component of classroom management is trust building, team building, and self-esteem building. To foster an atmosphere of trust, we engage in a variety of activities designed to be fun as well as self-esteem builders. It is my belief that children need to keep moving and need lots of opportunities for social interactions.

Community Circle
Community Circle is for the purpose of building community within the classroom and working out problems among the students. It is also a time for celebrating achievements and successes which occurred during the week, month, or trimester! This is an integral component of my classroom management system.

REWARDS & CONSEQUENCES

At Rio Calaveras, we firmly believe that students will only learn effectively in an environment which is conducive to the teaching and learning process: calm, safe and respectful. Students benefit from established routines, clear guidelines and courteous relationships with staff and one another.

Positive Consequences
In our class, we have high expectations of student behavior and I ALWAYS encourage students to make good decisions.  Those students exhibiting good behavior and courtesy are rewarded with one or more items below:
- Praise and recognition during class meetings
- "Otter-be-awesome" Coupons and Class Money
- A positive text/phone call/email home

- Points toward group or whole-class reward
- Recognition on our class website
- Recognition at school's award ceremonies
- and other classroom privileges...

Negative Consequences
On the first day of class and throughout the year, students understand that they cannot expect that their behavior will be allowed to disrupt the classroom and the education of other students. Students falling short of expected behaviors will receive a personal conference to talk about making right decisions. If the negative behaviors persist, one or more items below will apply according to the infraction.
- Fines (class money)
- Reflection time (in class or another teacher's class)
- Loss of privileges
- text/e-mail/phone call to parents
- Meeting with Principal or Assistant Principal
