WINNERS:
- Cassandra (10)
- Clarke (1)
During the summer, eight students are trying to hook some trout on this part of the river.
Fishing people like to fish in their own holes. So to separate everyone, Mr. Pham wants to draw two (2) straight lines across the river map so that each student can fish on his or her own section of the river.

YOUR MISSION (Should you choose to accept it):
  1. Help your beautiful teacher by drawing TWO straight lines that divide a section of the river for each student. No one can share a space. Each student must be in his or her own river boundary drawn by the lines.
  2. After drawing the lines, find a spot for Kyle and Ryan to fish on their own section of the river without sharing a river space with other students.
NOTE: 10 points for the correct answer. Partial Points will given for how close you get to the answer.

BRAIN TEASER 1 - 2pts.
Mr. Pham went camping in the summer. One morning, he started from his tent and hiked south for 2 miles. Then he turned east and hiked for 2 miles. He then turned north and hiked for another 2 miles, at which point, he was back at the campsite. He saw a bear inside his tent eating all his food!
What color was the bear? 😝
ANSWER: White *
* The only place you can hike 2 miles south, then east for 2 miles, then north for 2 miles and end up back at your starting point is the North Pole. There are only white polar bears in the north pole.

BRAIN TEASER 2 - 2pts.
Mr. Pham shows a picture of a person in his family. One student asks who it is. Mr. Pham replies, "I don't have any siblings. But that person's father is my father's son."
Who was in the picture?😎

ANSWER:
Mr. Pham's son

Our first STEM project this year was building a sundial... if you can remember.
A sundial has the fewest moving parts of any timepiece (just a gnomon-actually, the shadow of the gnomon).
Which timepiece has the most? 😁

ANSWER: Sand in an hourglass

Group Earth is trying to figure out a math problem for the Academic Challenge:
In the picture, the big square has an area of 60 square inches. What is the area of the smaller square?
There is a really fast and easy way to find the answer (which does not require algebra). 😁

5 points for the correct answer and another 5 points if you can tell me what is that fast and easy way.

Hint: It might be easier if you print out a copy and cut out the 2 squares or something... you can find the riddle on Mr. Pham's desk.

ANSWER: 30 square inches.
We turn the small square as shown in the picture. We can see that it is half the size of the big one, as indicated by the dotted lines. These dotted lines divide the large square into 8 triangles, and the small square into 4 triangles.

WINNERS: 😥

FISHY PROBLEM...

Our class bought a fish tank for our pet fish. The tank has a base of 12 inches x 18 inches and is 12 inches in height.
Mr. Pham is filling the tank with water and he wants to know that if the faucet let out 3 cubic inches of water every second, how many seconds (or minutes) until the fish tank is full? Who can help him with this problem?
(3 points)

ANSWER: For a fish tank with a volume of 2,592 cubic inches, and the faucet letting out water at 3 cubic inches per second, it will take 864 seconds (14 minutes and 24 seconds) to fill up the tank.
The Math:
V = 12 x 18 x 12 = 2,592 cubic inches. 3 cubic inches of water every second.
2,592 ÷ 3 = 864 seconds.

In this puzzle, there are 6 circles joined together by lines. You have 6 numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). Put each number in a circle, BUT, the circles connected by a line CANNOT have consecutive numbers. For example, 3 cannot be connected with 2 or 4. (3 points)
