TEAM DEBATE
December 5-8, 2022 - Our Class held a Team Debate event pitting 10 teams of 3 students against each other. The purpose of the debates is to familiarize ourselves with the process of researching and finding facts to support our position on certain issues. This is also to help with our upcoming Opinion Writing assignment! Another benefit is learning how to use strong evidence to present your case and counter-argue effectively to get votes from the audience.
Once each side had presented their case, the rest of the class, acting as the jury, voted for the team that had the most persuasive argument.
Here are the debate prompts and results of class voting.
1. Do police belong in schools? 4% YES - 96% NO
2. Should cell phones be allowed in class? 39% YES - 61% NO
3. Should children entered beauty pageants? 42% YES - 58% NO
4. Should skateboarding be banned in public places? 42% YES - 58% NO
5. Is space exploration worth the money we spend on it? 52% YES - 48% NO
